TD-SCDMA Update
March 16, 2007
- The Xinhua News reported that China's MII (Ministry of Information Industry) has issued telecom equipment network access licenses to ZTE and Datang Telecom Technology, enabling both companies to supply TD-SCDMA equipment to mobile operators. Furthermore, with the aforementioned license, both ZTE and Datang are now qualified to bid for equipment procurement contracts from mobile operators involved in the upcoming TD-SCDMA trials, notably China Mobile.

- According to the SINA News, the TD-SCDMA trial network on the outskirts of Seoul, Korea saw initial success in making phone calls in late February 2007. Datang Mobile made a voice call with its Swallow mobile phone, and ZTE testified to the video call functionality of the network with its Culver model. Planned future trials include testing the feasibility of wireless HSDPA data transmission service on the TD-SCDMA platform. SK Telecom, the Korean partner in the trial network, has decided to further invest six billion Won (US$6.34 million; US$1 = 946.07 Won) in developing TD-SCDMA technology.

- China Mobile and PTAC (China National Postal and Telecommunications Appliances Corporation), a state-owned communications construction firm, have signed an agreement for collaboration on TD-SCDMA trial network construction. The terms of the deal encompass joint equipment procurement and network construction in the eight cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang, Qinhuangdao, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Xiamen.
